Emirate Dome, Badagry

Badagry needed a signature civic structure that could serve as a marker for its growth: an assembly space at meaningful scale, structurally ambitious, delivered in a coastal environment with corrosion and cyclonic wind loading. There was no local precedent for a 24-metre-apex dome of this specification. The client wanted a build that would still be the town’s reference structure in fifty years.

Treaty took the project on a fixed-price, fixed-programme basis with structural steel, MEP and architectural finish self-delivered under one main contract. Foundations were designed to accommodate the coastal geotechnical profile. Steel was fabricated in Lagos, transported in sections and erected on site with a bespoke lifting sequence. Value engineering during design shaved 11% off the initial cost estimate without compromising the final architectural intent.

The two hardest problems were the geometric tolerance on the dome shell and the coastal environment. The dome required 216 unique steel members with tolerance below ±3mm across a 24-metre span; every member was digitally fabricated and pre-checked before shipment. Salt-air corrosion was controlled through a zinc-rich primer system with a specified 30-year service life, applied under humidity-controlled conditions. Civil works had to complete ahead of the rainy season to avoid a six-week weather delay.

The dome opened on programme, within budget, and with zero lost-time safety incidents across the 22-month works. It has become the town’s reference civic structure and the anchor of a wider urban renewal masterplan.
